Supporting Employees With Non-Pay Offers Through the Cost of Living Crisis: The Importance of Equity and A Person-Centred Approach

13 Mar 2024
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Between August and September 2022, 87% of households in the UK experienced an increase in their cost of living (ONS) with those in ‘poorer households’ relatively harder hit.  The cost of living crisis, while originally forecasted to stabilise by the end of 2023, is now expected to until later in 2024 (Bank of England). For many organisations, offering pay incentives to support employees through this time is untenable. Instead, many organisations have sought to implement a range of strategies to provide practical and emotional support. Yet little is known about how these will be received or whether they will be effective in supporting those most in need. This presentation reports findings from a wide ranging research programme conducted by Affinity Health at Work, sponsored by the Affinity Health at Work research consortium, which took an evidence based approach, including an academic and practitioner evidence review, data collected from 6 organisations (including 22 focus groups and survey data from 737 participants) and a range of thought leaders.  The presentation will describe the range of support offerings that are offered and the issues and discrepancies that may exist between these offerings and employee needs and wants along with a summary of the barriers and facilitators to employees receiving, accessing and using support and resources. Clear recommendations will be provided for both employers and managers.
